INGREDIENT NOTES & SUBSTITUTIONS

Shaved beef steak: This ultra-thin sliced steak is one of my favorite Trader Joe’s products! It cooks up super quickly. If you can’t find it, or need a substitute, thinly sliced flank steak works well, too.

21 Salute Seasoning: This Trader Joe’s seasoning is made up of a zillion and one spices including onion powder, black pepper, thyme, and garlic powder. It’s PERFECT for these Philly Cheesesteaks.

If you can’t find it at TJ’s, you can buy it on Amazon or use another steak seasoning such as Montreal.

Cheese: The most popular cheese for Philly chesesteaks is provolone. Howeverrrrr….if you want to use processed cheese like Cheese Whiz, I’m not stopping you! American cheese is also great.

Bread/Buns: I go back and forth between using sturdy, crusty rolls for these cheesesteaks, and using a soft roll — both are awesome. If you love making your own bread, these sandwiches are IDEAL on this homemade Jimmy John’s bread!!

EXPERT TIPS

  1. The Trader Joe’s shaved steak is super thinly sliced and tightly packed. Just use tongs to gently break up the pieces as it’s cooking.
  2. The 21 Salute Seasoning does not include salt, like most seasoning blends do. Make sure to add the salt, then taste the meat and see if a bit more is needed.
  3. If you don’t have a lid for your skillet, just put a baking sheet over the top and allow the cheese to melt.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 tsp. olive oil
  • 1 lb. Trader Joe's shaved beef
  • 2 tsp. sea salt, divided
  • 2 tsp. Trader Joe's 21 Salute Seasoning
  • 1 large bell pepper, diced
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 4-6 soft hoagie rolls

Instructions

  • Cook Beef: In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. When the oil is hot, add shaved beef. Season meat with 1 tsp. sea salt and 2 tsp. 21 Salute Seasoning blend. Cook the beef for 3-4 minutes, breaking it up with tongs as it cooks. When the beef is no longer pink, transfer it to a plate and cover with foil to keep warm.
  • Cook Veggies: In the same hot skillet, add pepper and onions. Season with the remaining 1 tsp. of salt. Turn the heat down to medium-low and cook the veggies fo 8-10 minutes until soft.
  • Add: When the veggies are cooked, add meat (plus all of the juices from the plate!) back to the skillet and toss the meat with the veggies. Place 4 slices of provolone cheese over the top of the meat/veggie mixture. Cover the skillet (if you don't have a lid, you can use a baking sheet) and let the cheese melt for about one minute.
  • Finish: While the cheese is melting, warm your hoagie rolls in the microwave. You can also toast them in the oven if you have extra time. Pile the meat/veggie and cheese mixture into your warmed rolls and serve right away!
