How Trader Joe’s Was Made…it might shock you!

Ever wonder how Trader Joe’s was “made?” Well, here’s one version…I totally LOL’ed! My shopping cart at my local Trader Joe’s ALWAYS tries to run away from me!! Watch until at least 2:00…The Holderness Family LOVES Trader Joe’s!

HOW TRADER JOE’S WAS *ACTUALLY* CREATED

Trader Joe’s was founded by Joe Coulombe in 1967 (get it? JOE??!). After getting an MBA from Stanford, he worked for a pharmacy chain called Rexall (RIP my Rexall Drugs in Berkeley, CA!).

In the mid-60’s, Joe noticed that as Americans became more educated and well-traveled, they developed broader tastes but weren’t always satisfied with the selection at traditional supermarkets.

After Rexall decided to close the convenience stores, Joe bought them and turned them into the first Trader Joe’s locations. The original store in Pasadena, California still exists today!

Joe’s vision was to provide a unique shopping experience. The original stores had a tropical, South Seas theme (my store still does!). Joe designed the concept for educated, adventurous shoppers seeking delicious, affordable, and unique foods and drinks from around the world.

In case you were wondering, Joe passed away on February 28th, 2020 at the age of 89.

All hail Joe!!!!
