RECIPE INGREDIENTS
You’ll need the following ingredients to make these yummy Chocolate Covered Rice Krispie Treats:
INGREDIENT NOTES
Rice Krispies cereal: I like to use the classic Rice Krispies cereal, but any brand of rice cereal will work.
Semi-sweet chocolate chips: When melted with the butter, they make the perfect dipping chocolate to dunk these treats into. You can also use milk chocolate chips if that’s what’s available to you in your local grocery store.
Sprinkles (not shown, optional): Sprinkles are added to the chocolate for an extra pop of color and fun! Mix and match however you like!
HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE DIPPED RICE KRISPIE TREATS: STEP-BY-STEP
Here are some quick visual instructions. Remember that full instructions with exact ingredients will be in the printable recipe card below!
Steps 1 & 2: In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, melt butter, marshmallows, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir gently until the mixture is melted.
Pour the melted marshmallows over the Rice Krispie cereal in a large bowl.
Step 3 & 4: Fold the cereal into the marshmallow mixture until everything is well-coated.
Transfer the cereal mixture into a 9×13 greased pan and spread evenly. Allow the cereal treats to set for 1-2 hours.
Step 5 & 6: Cut the crispy treats into your preferred size. Meanwhile, in a microwaveble bowl, add chocolate chips and remaining butter. Heat chocolate in a microwave at 50% power in 20-second intervals until melted. Stir the chocolate between each interval.
Dip each of the cut rice crispy treats into the melted chocolate. Place them on a piece of parchment paper or on a plate.
Step 7: Sprinkle with desired toppings like chopped nuts, dried fruit, or colored sprinkles. Allow the treats to cool for a few minutes to allow the chocolate to set.
RECIPE TIPS & TRICKS
- “Toss” the cereal-marshmallow mixture. Use two large serving spoons and toss the rice cereal together with the melted marshmallows. I like to use my Danish dough whisk.
- Grease the baking pan well. Make sure you generously grease the dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray to prevent the rice krispy treats from sticking to the pan.
- Use a fork. Coat a fork with butter or cooking spray and use it to gently press the mixture evenly into the pan.
- Speed up resting. Pop the rice crispy treats into the fridge to speed up the resting time.
Confidence Tip
If you chill the rice crispy treats for at least one hour, it will make it easier to cut them into smaller pieces with perfect edges.
STORAGE
Storage: Store leftover chocolate-dipped rice krispies treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. After that, it’s best to transfer them to the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
You can also store these chewy treats in individual-size servings. Just wrap them tightly with plastic wrap and keep them in a storage container or a ziplock bag to enjoy a perfect on-to-go treat.
Freezing: These rice crispy treats can also be frozen for up to 2 months. Just keep them tightly wrapped in plastic wrap and in a ziplock bag. For more details on how to freeze this classic treat, be sure to read my post on Can You Freeze Rice Krispie Treats?
ADDITIONS & SUBSTITUTIONS
ADDITIONS:
- Enhance with salt: Sprinkle a pinch of salt directly on the chocolate to enhance the rich chocolatey flavor.
- Chopped nuts: Sprinkle crushed peanuts or almonds over the chocolate for an added crunch.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
- Other chips: Use white chocolate chips to give these treats a lighter flavor or go with dark chocolate chips for a richer taste. You can also try butterscotch chips to switch things up.
- Make rice krispie pops: Instead of bars, cut them into small pieces and insert a lollipop stick or a popsicle stick in the bottom center for a fun bite-sized treat.
YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Absolutely! While Rice Krispies is a classic choice, you can experiment with other cereals like Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Pebbles, or Corn Puffs for a fun twist on this traditional treat.
You can melt the chocolate using a double boiler on the stovetop. Simply place a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water, making sure the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Stir the chocolate frequently until melted and smooth.
