Ingredients needed to make air fryer frozen hash browns.

INGREDIENT NOTES

Frozen “Shredded” (hash brown) Potatoes: These are often labeled as “hash browns” or “shredded potatoes” and sold in the frozen section near the french fries. Be sure to check there are NO additional seasonings (especially salt!) because you’ll be adding in your own seasoning.

Frozen Diced Hash Browns: These are also found in the frozen food section. Sometimes they are called “Southern Style Hash Browns.”

Frozen Hash Brown Patties: Also found in the frozen aisle. I am in LOVE with these from Trader Joe’s!

Olive Oil: I like the flavor of olive oil, but any oil you have on hand will work.

Seasonings: Here is where you can either keep it simple or go all out! For this recipe, we are just using salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. But if you love a certain spice or seasoning, use it! See a list of my go-to essential spices here.

Follow these simple steps to make frozen air fryer hashbrowns – three ways! Remember that full instructions with exact ingredients will be in the recipe card below.

Shredded Hash Browns in the Air Fryer

Step 1: Toss shredded hash browns with olive oil. Sprinkle on seasonings and mix well.

Step 2: Place shredded hash browns in a single layer on parchment paper in the air fryer basket (it’s totally OK if they overlap a bit…that’s what gives you a good combo of crispy and soft parts!).

Air fry hash browns for 15-17 minutes, giving them a quick shake every 4-5 minutes. Serve right away.

Diced Hashbrowns in the Air Fryer

Step 1: Toss diced hash browns with olive oil. Sprinkle on seasonings and mix well.

Step 2:  Place diced hash browns in a single layer in the air fryer basket (it’s totally OK if they overlap a bit–just make sure you don’t overload the air fryer).

Air fry diced hash browns for 20-23 minutes, giving them a quick shake every 4-5 minutes. Hash brown should be nice and golden brown on the outside and a bit soft on the inside.

Hash Brown Patties in the Air Fryer

Step 1: Preheat air fryer to 400°F. If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheat setting, just turn it to 400°F and give it about 3-5 minutes to come to temperature.

Step 2: Place frozen hash brown patties into the air fryer (do not overlap). Air fry for 8 minutes. Flip, then air fry for an additional 2-4 minutes until crisp and golden brown. Serve right away.

RECIPE TIPS AND TRICKS

  • Parchment Paper: This parchment paper with holes, designed specifically for air fryers, is a GOD SEND and I strongly suggest using them!! Not only for this recipe, but other air fryer recipes as well. It will make your cleanup a snap.

Use this parchment paper for “tray” type air fryers and this parchment paper for square “drawer”-type air fryers. Just check to make sure the size will fit your specific air fryer.
  • Mix/Toss: For perfectly even cooking and maximum crispiness, mix the shredded and diced hashbrowns every 4-5 minutes. You can also give them a good shake or stir at the halfway point.
  • No Added Seasoning: Be sure to double-check your frozen hash brown package to ensure they are not seasoned with salt or any additional seasoning.
  • Extra Crispy: If you like extra crispy hash browns, air fry 2-3 minutes more than the stated cooking time.

Confidence Tip

Different air fryers may vary a bit with cooking time. For best results, check your hash browns every few minutes after the halfway point to ensure they are cooked perfectly to your personal preference.

STORAGE & REHEATING

Storing: Store these air-fried hash brown potatoes in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Reheating: Rewarm in the air fryer a 390°°F for 3-4 minutes.

Additions & Substitutions

ADDITIONS:

  • Hot sauce: A dash of hot sauce over the top of the hash browns after air frying is a delicious easy way to add some heat!

SUBSTITUTIONS:

  • Spices: Garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper are my go-to spices for this air fryer hash browns recipe. But feel free to swap out the spices! Cayenne pepper or chili powder are great ways to add some heat. Seasoning salt is a great way to easily add flavor.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are some other seasonings you can use on hash browns?

Oh man, sky’s the limit here! However, some traditional seasonings that would work well are: seasoning salt, smoked paprika, chili powder, dried parsley, and cayenne pepper.

And although it’s not really a “seasoning,” throwing a layer of cheese on top during the last 5 minutes of cooking is heaven…just sayin’…

How long do you cook frozen hash browns in the air fryer?

Cook times depend on personal preference, but here are the guidelines for crispy hash browns:

Shredded Hash Browns: 15-17 minutes at 380°F.
Diced Hash Browns: 20-23 minutes at 380°F.
Hash Brown Patties: 400°F for 8 minutes on one side, then flip and cook an additional 2-4 minutes.

What goes well with these air fryer hashbrowns?

Serve any of these delicious hash browns with your favorite breakfast casserole, eggs, bacon, pancakes, french toast, waffles, fresh fruit, or any of your favorite breakfast foods!

I even like serving the diced hash browns as a dinner side dish–it’s a nice alternative to french fries!
