Trader Joe's shaved steak and broccoli in a pan.

Tested to perfection.

If I’m ever ordering Chinese takeout (Panda Express counts!), you can pretty much guarantee I am getting beef and broccoli. It’s just my thing. While I don’t claim to have a butane-powered stove or a seasoned wok in my kitchen to fully replicate Chinese cooking, I can tell you this recipe has been tested tirelessly until I thought it was perfect. The true key, I think, is the addition of just a half teaspoon of Trader Joe’s Umami Seasoning. It’s juuust that little somethin’ somethin’ that adds depth of flavor and just elevates this dish from good to great. You’re going to love it.

RECIPE INGREDIENTS

The ingredients to make this broccoli beef recipe are pretty simple:

  • Trader Joe’s shaved steak: Cooks SUPER quick!
  • Broccoli: I love the 12 oz. bag of florets
  • Soy Sauce
  • Beef Broth
  • Sesame Oil
  • Simple spices/pantry items: Brown sugar, cornstarch, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt.
  • Trader Joe’s Umami spice – the secret weapon!

Casey’s Top Tip: After you add your steak to the pan, take tongs and break it up as it cooks. Some of the pieces of shaved steak are pretty big, so sometimes I’ll even take kitchen shears and just slice it up right in the pan as it cooks!

Ingredients

For the sauce

  • 1 1/4 cups beef broth or stock
  • 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 1/2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp corn starch
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 tsp Trader Joe's Umami Seasoning

For the stir fry

  • 2 tsp olive oil just enough to lightly coat the bottom of the pan
  • 1 lb. Trader Joe's Beef Shaved Steak
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 12 oz. broccoli florets
  • Jasmine rice, for serving I love the TJ's frozen rice packets!

Instructions

  • Prep: In a small bowl or large measuring cup. whisk together sauce ingredients; set aside. Make sure your broccoli florets are all more-less a uniform size. If some are bigger, trim them down so they all cook quickly and evenly.
  • Cook Beef: Heat oil over medium-high. Add shaved beef steak, and season with garlic powder, onion powder, and sea salt. Use tongs and stir fry the beef for 1-2 minutes, breaking up the meat into smaller pieces as it cooks.
  • Add Broccoli and Sauce: Add the broccoli florets and the sauce. Bring the sauce to a boil then reduce heat to medium. Cover the pan and cook for 5-6 minutes until beef is cooked through and broccoli is tender. {Tip: if your pan doesn't have a lid, you can use a baking sheet to cover it!}
  • Finish: While the dish is cooking, microwave your Trader Joe's Jasmine rice. Spoon broccoli and beef over hot rice and serve!
