When in doubt, sauce.

I don’t know about you, but I am a sauce-girl. Sauce makes everything better! Some of my favorite sauces come from Trader Joe’s (hint: This Magnifisauce is magnificent)! Trader Joe’s has my FAVORITE tzatziki sauce, aside from homemade, of course. So if you happen into Trader Joe’s, pick up a container of the tzatziki and save yourself a few minutes when making this recipe…you might find some other gems in there, too! Happy sauce-ing!

MAIN INGREDIENTS

These are the main ingredients you’ll need to make your Greek Chicken Pita Wraps:

Chicken Marinade Ingredients: This simple marinade is made of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and seasonings, including paprika, Italian seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, and salt and black pepper.

Cucumber Relish Ingredients: A fresh relish made of chopped English cucumber, quartered cherry tomatoes, chopped green bell pepper, sliced red onion, and finely chopped fresh parsley. Tossed in fresh lemon juice and seasoned with salt and black pepper.

Tzatski Sauce: You can make your own sauce or purchase a pre-made tzatziki. Trader Joe’s is my personal fave! A recipe for homemade tzatziki sauce can be found here.

HOW TO MAKE GREEK CHICKEN PITAS: STEP-BY-STEP

Here are some quick visual instructions. Remember that full instructions with exact ingredients will be in the printable recipe card below!

Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, whisk all the marinade ingredients until well combined. Add the chicken and toss to fully coat. Place the chicken in the fridge to marinate.

Step 2: While the chicken is marinating, make the cucumber relish. In another mixing bowl, add all the ingredients for the cucumber relish and toss until well-combined. If you’re making tzatziki sauce, you can quickly whip that up in this step.

Step 3: In a large frying pan over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of oil. Once the oil is hot and shimmering, add the chicken in a single layer. Cook the chicken for 4 minutes, flip it, and cook for an additional 4 minutes or until the juices run clear. Cook until the internal temperature registers 165°F with an instant-read meat thermometer.

Step 4: Assemble the Greek wraps by spreading out the pitas or flatbreads on a flat surface. Evenly distribute the cucumber relish, cooked chicken, and drizzle some tzatziki sauce. Wrap tightly and serve immediately.

EXPERT TIPS

  • Dry the chicken first. Pat the pieces of chicken with a paper towel to remove excess moisture and help the Greek chicken marinade stick to the meat.
  • Marinate overnight. This chicken recipe has a very flexible marinating time. If you know you’ll be short on time, consider marinating chicken ahead of time and keeping it in the fridge until ready to cook.
  • Warm pita bread first. To soften pitas/flatbreads and make them pliable for folding, warm them in the microwave for a bit. You can also heat them on a medium-high heat gas flame on your stove (but watch them closely) and flip them with a pair of tongs. This creates a nice char.

Casey’s Top Tip: If you’re short on time, buying pre-sliced chicken tenders and a tub of Trader Joe’s Tzatziki sauce (or another brand of store-bought tzatziki sauce) will save you at least 10-15 minutes! #winning

SUBSTITUTIONS AND VARIATIONS

  • Chicken – Feel free to try other cuts of chicken like chicken thighs or tenders. I prefer skinless chicken breast tenders but any cut will work here.
  • Add some crunch – Try adding shredded greens like baby spinach, arugula, or romaine lettuce.
  • Greek toppings – If you really love Greek food, consider adding other delicious Mediterranean flavors like kalamata olives and feta cheese.

Notes

Note: I used to love the Flat Out Wrap but they discontinued them in March of 2024! If pita bread is too heavy for you, you can also use a tortilla– the Mission spinach tortillas are delish!
