Ingredients needed to make a chocolate pudding pie with Jello pudding.

INGREDIENT NOTES & SUBSTITUTIONS

Jell-o pudding mix: I use the Jello Instant Chocolate Pudding Mix and Pie Filling (Use the instant pudding mix not Cook & Serve).

Chocolate pie crust: If you can’t find chocolate or and Oreo cookie crust, a simple graham cracker pie crust works perfectly, too.

Half and half: You can substitute regular whole milk here, but the half and half makes it more decadent. It also gives the pie a slightly thicker texture that helps when cutting it.

Whipped topping: Cool Whip, or any store brand works. You can also make homemade whipped cream.

Chocolate bar: You can make the pretty chocolate curls on top with a chocolate bar, but you can also sprinkle on chocolate chips!

EXPERT TIPS

  • To get the pretty chocolate curls on top of the pie, simple use a potato peeler to shave the chocolate bar right onto the top of the pie.
  • You can get creative when you decorate the this chocolate pie! Chocolate chips, white chocolate shavings, or even chocolate sprinkles are all delicious and pretty!

Casey’s Top Tip: To make the pie easier to cut, allow it to chill in the fridge overnight. You can also pop it in the freezer for a few hours.

Prep Time 10 minutes
Chill time (optional) 1 day
Total Time 1 day 10 minutes
Course Dessert
Cuisine American
Servings 8

Ingredients

  • 2 3.8 oz. boxes of Jello Instant Chocolate Pudding Mix and Pie Filling Not Cook and Serve
  • 2 1/2 cups of half and half
  • 1 8 oz. tub of whipped topping or homemade whipped cream, thawed such as Cool Whip
  • 1 10 inch chocolate pie crust an Oreo crust or graham cracker crust works, too
  • 1 chocolate bar to make chocolate shavings

Instructions

  • Make the pudding: To a large bowl, add chocolate pudding mix and milk. Beat with a whisk (or electric mixer) until slightly thickened (about 1-2  minutes). Refrigerate for 5-10 minutes. After 5-10 minutes, fold in HALF of the whipped topping into the pudding mixture.
  • Spread: Spread the chocolate mixture evenly over the chocolate pie crust.
  • Layer: Over the chocolate layer, layer on the remaining whipped topping. Gently spread it, leaving some of the chocolate layer showing around the edges.
  • Chill & finish: Refrigerate the pie for at least 4 hours, or up to overnight (OVERNIGHT WORKS BEST) to allow the pie to set.
You can even freeze it for a few hours if you’re in a time crunch.
Use a vegetable peeler and shave the chocolate bar to make “curls” on top of the pie.
