INGREDIENT NOTES & SUBSTITUTIONS
Shawarma chicken thighs: These little gems can be found in the refrigerated meat section. They are raw and each package contains about 4-5 chicken thighs.
Rice: I love the Trader Joe’s frozen rice packets! The are ready in 3 minutes.
Tzatziki sauce: You can use Trader Joe’s Garlic Spread Dip or Creamy Cucumber Dip in place of the tzatziki. Or you can make your own delicious tzatziki sauce!
EXPERT TIPS
- Let the chicken rest before slicing: After cooking, rest the shawarma chicken thighs for 5 minutes before slicing. This helps the juices redistribute so the chicken stays tender and juicy.
- Use the air fryer for the best texture: While you can bake or pan-cook the chicken, the air fryer delivers the crispiest edges with the least effort and clean up!
- Meal prep it! Assemble rice and chicken in containers, and keep toppings (cucumbers, tomatoes, tzatziki) separate until serving. It keeps everything fresh and makes for grab-and-go lunches all week.

Trader Joe’s Shawarma Chicken Bowls
Ingredients
- 1 package Trader Joe's Shawarma Chicken Thighs about 4-5 thighs come in one package
- 2 packages of Trader Joe's frozen rice or 2-3 cups of cooked rice
- 1 12oz. container Trader Joe's tzatziki sauce See Note 1
- 1 cup chopped cucumber
- 1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
- 1/2 cup red onion, diced (optional)
- juice from one lemon
- salt/pepper
Instructions
- Cook chicken: Place the shawarma chicken thighs in your air fryer. Try not to overlap, if possible. Air fry at 400°F for 18-20 minutes, until thighs are cooked through (at least 165°F). When the chicken is done cooking, allow the chicken to rest for a few minutes, then dice it into small pieces. You can also cook your chicken thighs in the oven, in a skillet, or on the grill! - Prep veggies & rice: While the chicken is cooking, dice up your cucumber, tomatoes, and onion (if using). Squeeze on some lemon juice, season with salt and pepper, and toss to combine. If you are using Trader Joe's frozen microwave rice, pop that in the microwave for 3 minutes.
- Assemble: Divide cooked rice between four bowls/plates. Top with chicken, veggies, and a big dollop of tzatziki sauce!
