INGREDIENT NOTES & SUBSTITUTIONS
Rice: The key to good fried rice is DRY rice. 1-2 day-old rice is perfect. However if you don’t have leftover rice, simply lay the cooked rice out on a plate or baking sheet and pop it in the fridge or freezer while you prep.
Chicken Apple Sausage: The sweetness of the chicken apple sausage reminds me of the Chinese sausage my mom puts in her fried rice — I love that sweet and salty combo! But feel free to experiment with any of the Trader Joe’s cooked sausage varieties.
Veggies: Frozen veggies work best here — they are quick and easy. Use whatever combo you like.
Soyaki: This sauce is perfect to bring this dish together!
Crunchy Chili Onion: This is optional for a little heat and crunch. I also like spooning it over the top!
EXPERT TIPS FOR PERFECT FRIED RICE
- Use dry, COLD rice: If your rice isn’t dry, this fried rice dish won’t have the right texture. Make sure you take the time to make the rice ahead of time, or ensure it’s had time to sit out and dry for a bit. Short on time? Lay the rice out on a baking sheet and pop it in the fridge or freezer while you prep the rest of the ingredients.
- Prep ahead: This recipe doesn’t have too much prep, but make sure you chop your onion and and garlic, beat your eggs and have all the ingredients nearby as you’re cooking.
- Taste and add: Taste the fried rice at the end and add more soy sauce, Soyaki and Crunchy Chili Onion, if needed! Fried rice is one of those dishes where you just sort of throw what you have into a skillet — I always find I end up using slightly different amounts of rice and veggies. So tasting for flavor at the end is key!
- Nonstick skillet: Since you’re scrambling your eggs right in with everything else, using a non-stick skillet is important.

Trader Joe’s Chicken Apple Sausage Fried Rice
Ingredients
Fried rice ingredients
- 2 packages of Trader Joe's frozen jasmine rice COOLED and DRIED or about 3-4 cups cooked rice, see Note 1
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2-3 Trader Joe's Smoked Apple Chardonnay Chicken Sausage links, diced into small bite-sized pieces
- 1-2 cups frozen veggies I use TJ’s frozen Organic Foursome Vegetable Medley
- 1 small onion, chopped about 1 cup
- 1 tbsp garlic, minced (about 4-5 cloves) the best garlic chopper!
- 4 eggs, beaten
- 5-6 green onions, sliced
For the sauce
- 1/3 cup Trader Joe's Soyaki sauce
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1-2 tbsp Crunchy Chili Onion optional, more or less to taste
Instructions
- Cook Rice (if necessary): Cook rice according to instructions. One of the keys to good fried rice is DRY rice. If possible, use day old rice. If not, simply lay the cooked rice out on a plate to dry while you prep.
- Make the sauce: Whisk sauce ingredients together, set aside.
- Cook Sausage: In a large (preferably nonstick) skillet, heat 1 tbsp olive oil over medium-high heat. Add sausage. Cook sausage 2-3 minutes until slightly browned.
- Add: Add veggies, onion, and garlic and cook 3-4 minutes until the onion is slightly soft. Then, slide the sausage and veggies to one side of the skillet. Pour the beaten eggs onto the other side of the skillet. Using a spatula, scramble the eggs (you may have to turn the heat down slightly). Once the eggs are cooked, mix everything together.
- Finish: Add rice and sauce. Cook for 1-2 minutes, tossing to ensure all of the rice is coated with the sauce. Top with green onions and serve with more Crunchy Chili Onion, if you like.

That little note about spreading freshly cooked rice on a sheet pan and chilling it while you prep makes this feel genuinely encouraging. You keep the barrier low without pretending texture doesn’t matter.
