1lb.lean ground beef (see Note 1)ground turkey or ground chicken also works!
1small onion, chopped
1tspgarlic powder
1tspsalt
1/2tsp pepper (or a few turns of fresh ground pepper)
1/4cupbrown sugarlight or dark
114 oz.can tomato sauce
1tbsptomato paste
2tbspWorcestershire sauce
cheese, for topping (optional)cheddar, mozzarella, jack all work well
For the Texas toast (See Note 2)
1loaf bakery French breadsliced into 1 inch thick slices
4tbspbutter, melted
1/2tsporegano
1/2tspgarlic powder
Instructions
Preheat oven to 400°F.
Place butter in microwave for about 30-60 seconds until melted. With a pastry brush, brush each slice of bread with butter. Then, sprinkle each slice with garlic powder and oregano (to taste). Place bread slices on a baking sheet and set aside.
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown ground beef (2-3 minutes). Break up meat as it cooks. Pro Tip: Using a potato masher to break up the meat makes it really easy! Drain excess fat if needed.
Add onion and cook 2-3 minutes more until onion is slightly soft.
Add garlic powder, salt, pepper, brown sugar tomato sauce, tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well and let simmer over medium heat for about 5-6 minutes. Taste and season with salt, if needed. A dash of hot sauce is also great to add if you like spice.
While sloppy joes are simmering away, bake Texas toast for 6-8 minutes until lightly toasted and starting to turn golden brown. If using store-bought Texas toast, cook in the oven according to package directions or use my air fryer instructions.
Top each piece of toast with a generous amount of sloppy joe mixture. At this point you can enjoy them as-is OR move on to next step...
Heat broiler. Top each sloppy joe with cheese. Broil about 1-2 minutes until cheese is just melted. Serve immediately!
Notes
Note 1: I like using 90% lean ground beef or extra lean ground beef (93% lean). It's healthier and you don't have to drain it!Note 2: If you want to skip making your own Texas toast, just use frozen Texas toast from the freezer section at the grocery store!
